Aquatic Invasives

New Zeland Mudsnail

In 2007, the New Zealand mudsnail was discovered in the lower San Lorenzo River. This highly invasive aquatic snail has the potential to alter our local stream food webs. If you fish or recreate near the lower San Lorenzo River, learn how to clean your boots and gear to avoid spreading this pest to other watersheds. Click here to learn more

Quagga and Zebra Mussels

Quagga and Zebra mussels have not been found in Santa Cruz County and we want to keep it that way! In 2008, zebra mussels were discovered in San Justo reservoir in San Benito County. Quagga and zebra mussels are non-native, invasive freshwater mussels that can wreak havoc on local ecosystems and water storage and treatment facilities.

The most common ways mussels are spread to new areas is on recreational boats or in bilge water that contains mussel larvae (veligers). In Santa Cruz County, private boats are restricted at City of Santa Cruz Loch Lomond. Private boats without bilge and water containing areas are still allowed at Pinto Lake, operated by the City of Watsonville.
